Most homeowners put off having professional drain cleaning services performed until a minor problem turns into a major disaster. Over the counter drain cleaning products don’t completely clean out pipes and can cause serious problems, including corroding the pipes. You can also count on increased costs if you put off having the drains professionally cleaned.

Why Clean Drains Are Important

All homes and businesses in the United States depend on complex drainage systems to dispose of waste water efficiently. Unfortunately, a buildup of contaminants in the drain system can make waste water disposal virtually impossible. If your drains are clogged, you should contact a professional plumber because they’ll have the experience and tools necessary to do drain cleaning properly and quickly.

What Causes Clogged Drains

There are several reasons why drains become clogged. Kitchen sinks, for instance, are commonly clogged with grease and food. In bathtubs, clogging is typically caused by soap and hair build up. Whatever the root cause, slow drainage, drain and sewer blockages will eventually result in expensive damages to the entire draining system, potentially leading to cracked or burst pipes.

Why Drain Cleaners Hurt Your System

Chemical-laden drain cleaners might seem like a fast and easy solution; however, they do more harm than good. According to ConsumerReports.Org, household drain cleaners are made up of powerful, toxic chemicals, like bleach, peroxide, lye and caustic potash. Due to their highly toxic chemical makeup, they’re hazardous to your health if inhaled and potentially fatal if swallowed. Over the counter drain cleaning products can also cause serious burns if they come into contact with the skin.

Besides being toxic to the human body, chemical drain cleaners can cause costly damage to plumbing systems. Drain cleaners eat away at everything, not just the waste blocking the pipes. The damage can be even worse if the cleaner fails to clear the clogged drain. If that’s the case, the corrosive chemicals remain in the pipes. The longer the chemicals sit, the more likely they are to cause serious problems. In addition, older pipes and pipes made out of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) are more vulnerable to damage from drain cleaners. Using these products will result in expensive plumbing pipe repairs and even necessitate replacement.

How to Reduce Drain Cleaning Frequency

Most clogs happen in the bathroom and kitchen. There are a few things you can do to reduce drain cleaning frequency.

Bathroom

The number one cause of clogs in the bathroom sink, tub and toilet include long hair and toothpaste. Other things you should never flush or send down the drain include feminine hygiene products, nail clippings, cotton-tipped swabs and dental floss. If you have a clogged bathroom sink or bathtub, try filling the basin or tub with hot water, then unstop the plug, allowing the water to flush out the drain.

Kitchen Drains

When it comes to kitchen drain clogs, grease is usually the culprit. While grease may go down the pipe in a hot, liquid state, it solidifies as it cools, causing a clog. Instead of flushing grease down the drain or garbage disposal, put grease into a jar, let it solidify and throw it away. To keep food from going down the drain, use a filter of some sort, readily available at home improvement and general retail stores.
